When Lentel met with the owners of this Tsawwassen home, they were considering whether to build new or renovate. The house was showing its age – and an earlier addition did not blend well visually with the rest of the home. Both owners worked from home, and their growing family needed more space.
The owners loved the home’s existing post-and-beam construction, and felt it would be wasteful to tear it down. The house was in decent shape, but needed to be brought up to code with better insulation, and the old addition was out of level and needed repairing.
In the end, the owners decided to embark on a whole-home renovation with a new addition. Throughout the renovation, our team was careful to reuse timber and decking where we could, from areas that we gutted. We used Glulam beams in the new addition, as glued laminated timber is – pound for pound – stronger than steel and has greater strength and stiffness than comparably sized dimensional lumber.
At the back of the home, we constructed a large, covered outdoor seating area. Our landscaper worked around existing trees, which we were careful to preserve during construction, to create a simple, yet striking entry to the home.
